After Lawrence passed, Alma was a temple worker for 12 years developing many wonderful friendships. She organized many fundraisers to build new church buildings. She had many church callings including Relief Society President twice (once in Altamont and once in Springdale) Counselor in the Stake Relief Society Presidency Young Women President, Primary President, Sunday School teacher, and Ward Activities Director. The last few years, she loved to sit in her office and watch the people come and go. Alma kept busy working in the business until two months before her passing at 92 years young. They were blessed with another daughter after moving to Springdale. After a couple of years, the business was divided with Lawrence and Alma taking the Zion Park Market and Zion Park Motel which they successfully operated for the next 50 years. In 1972, they had the opportunity to buy into a business (the Bumbleberry) in Springdale, Utah, with Alma’s three brothers. Emmons for 22 years where they milked cows, farmed and had six children. She married Lawrence Allen Young on June 9, 1950, in the Salt Lake Temple. She graduated as valedictorian of her senior class in 1950. She was raised on a small farm at the edge of a small lake called Lake Borum in Duchesne County. Both of her sisters passed away at early ages, so Alma was raised as an only girl with three protective brothers and doting parents. A baby sister Barbara Myrl was born after Alma. Joyce is survived by sisters Julie Welch and Marianne (Kendall) Sorensen, as well as many beloved nieces, nephews and cousins. Joyce will be fondly remembered as a wonderful friend, sister and aunt, especially to Marianne’s children Ashley, Nate and Hailey, Gloria’s son Justin, as well as Julie’s boys Dwain and Derren Klein. She was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ and always valued her membership, serving in many capacities, including Primary and as ward newsletter specialist. She suffered with rheumatic fever as a child and related health problems as she aged, causing her a great deal of pain. Unfortunately, her health was never great. Joyce loved school and learning and had a sharp mind. She also loved painting and was hoping to return to it someday. Joyce had an active imagination and a creative mind and was a talented writer and photographer whose work appeared in several magazines. It was full of fun and entertaining adventures. She also authored a neighborhood “newsletter” which was a big hit. Joyce grew up in a great neighborhood where she often invited her friends to a “tea party” held in the playhouse her father built in their backyard. She married Michael Tibbetts, who passed away in March 2023. She assisted her sisters in caring for her parents. Joyce made many friends and made a huge difference in many young lives as a gifted and creative teacher.įollowing her retirement, Joyce moved from Murray to Bountiful to be near family. She taught in Gunnison, at Draper Elementary and in West Jordan, where she completed her 35-year career. She excelled in her teaching career, teaching special needs and gifted children. Joyce graduated from Richfield High School and went on to study at Brigham Young University and Southern Utah University, earning her teaching degree. Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, sister Gloria and her husband Michael Tibbetts. She was the second daughter in the family of four daughters, Julie, Joyce, Gloria and Marianne. Joyce was born in Richfield, Utah, on March 9, 1948, to Genevieve Sylvester Gardner and Blythe M. Joyce Gardner passed away from a fall and congestive heart failure on Jan.
